Sewing Lessons: INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
Are sewing lessons in your future?
Do you find yourself or family members wearing clothes that don’t fit right and you wish you could DO something about it?
Are you tired of paying for clothing alterations? Do you ever wish you could just do it yourself and save the money?
Are you a skilled seamstress, but could use a refresher course on certain skills?
Do you wish for your children or teenagers to learn and use sewing skills?
Do you want to learn how to turn your “fashion design” or “home decorating” dreams into realities?
Are you ready to learn that new skill that has been keeping you from completing your dream projects?

Like… * deciphering a sewing pattern * measuring / calculating / making window treatments * mitering corners * zipper installation * quilting * hemming a pair of pants or skirt* cuffs on your hubby’s dress pants *
* taking in a waistband * altering a dress * making a basic decorative pillow * making and applying piping * mending a hole properly * basic machine threading * altering a pattern to fit/ "modest"-ify *
* pleats * gathers * embroidery * buttonholes * facing/lining anything * professional finishing techniques * preserving childhood memories
*…wow this list could go on and on!!!

Please let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have always loved sewing and have been drawn to it as a creative outlet and a method to achieve goals. (Not to mention, good for the budget). My mother taught me at her knee (and from outside, looking in to the basement window to watch her at her sewing machine for hours on end) and she would even let me sit on her lap at the machine if I folded my arms quietly. Through my youth and many projects, I realized the possibilities, enjoyment and usefulness of this skill, so I continued my college education in this area, taking every class I could. I did get my Associates Degree in “Clothing & Textiles” from BYU-Idaho (back when it was Ricks College :) I was not satisfied enough with that, so I went to BYU-Provo and worked hard to get my Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in “Fashion Design-Emphasis: Costume”. Of course, in the meantime, I gained a fantastic husband and six great children.
I started my “Studio Julie Snow” right after graduation in 1997 and have been operating ever since. My studio has primarily been focused on custom creations and alterations for my clients, which I LOVE, and always will. I enjoy my work and being able to enrich people’s lives with a skill that is sadly slipping away from mainstream society and education. These degrees/ programs are not even available any more at many colleges and universities, including BYU.
Which leads me to my desire to share this skill with all who would like to empower themselves with the freedom to create in a new way, the option to bless themselves and their family, and the self-sufficient skills that can save your budget. And it is SO MUCH FUN!!!!

Here is a list of sewing classes I will be offering in my studio. Please take a moment to look them over and see if there is anything you are interested in for yourselves, your daughters (sons, too – even my brother can sew – he taught his wife!) your friends. Forward to anyone you think may be interested. The youngest age to start sewing (officially, at the machine) is between 8-10. You can start, however, at any age. Basically, you need to be tall enough to reach the “gas pedal” and still operate the machine.
I teach group lessons or private one-on-one lessons. If you have a specific project you would like to learn as a lesson, do not hesitate to contact me. Note: I am located in the Denver CO area. Call 303-693-5263 or send email to studiojuliesnow@gmail.com

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

I have been thinking about the craziness of the holiday season and trying really hard to focus on the joy of it all, you know, the real important stuff. I am always touched by this poem, it always rings true at Christmas...

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the abode only one creature was stirring, and she was cleaning the commode.

The children were finally sleeping, all snug in their beds, while visions of Playstation 3 and Barbie flipped through their heads.

The dad was snoring in front of the TV, with a half-constructed bicycle on his knee.

So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter, which made her sigh, "Now what’s the matter?"

With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand, she descended the stairs and saw the old man.

He was covered with ashes and soot, which fell with a shrug. "Oh, great," muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug."

"Ho-ho-ho!" cried Santa, "I’m glad you’re awake. Your gift was especially difficult to make." "Thanks, Santa, but all I want is some time alone."

"Exactly!" he chuckled, "I’ve made you a clone."

"A clone?" she asked, "What good is that? Run along, Santa, I’ve no time for chit-chat."

The mother’s twin: same hair, same eyes, same double chin. "She’ll cook, she’ll dust, she’ll mop every mess. You’ll relax, take it easy, watch The Young and the Restless."

"Fantastic!" the mom cheered. "My dream come true! I’ll Shop. I’ll read. I’ll sleep a whole night through!"

From the room above, the youngest began to fret. "Mommy?! I scared...and wet." The clone replied, "I’m coming, sweetheart."

"Hey," the mom smiled, "She knows her part." The clone changed the small one, and hummed a tune, as she bundled the child in a blanket cocoon.

"You the best mommy ever. I really love you." The clone smiled and sighed, "I love you too."

The mom frowned and said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal. That’s my child’s love, she’s trying to steal."

Smiling wisely, Santa said, "To me it is clear, only one loving mother is needed here."

The mom kissed her child, and tucked her into bed. "Thank you Santa, for clearing my head. I sometimes forget, it won’t be very long, when they’ll be too old for my cradle-song."

The clock on the mantle began to chime. Santa whispered to the clone, "It works every time."

With the clone by his side, Santa said, "Goodnight. Merry Christmas, Mom, you’ll be all right." _Author Unknown
