Sewing Lessons: CLASSES OFFERED

{{{ TECHNIQUES/ SKILLS }}} (sample materials provided)

*WARDROBE TECHNIQUE [Ongoing]
This ongoing class will teach basic to intermediate to advanced sewing skills to be used in clothing and wardrobe projects. Students will build a hands-on portfolio of skill samples. i.e. Basic stitches and their uses, reading a pattern/ layout basics, all types of hems, edge finishes, closures (zippers, buttonholes, etc), facings, linings, gathering, setting sleeves, etc. Sample materials provided.
*See supply list. Will complete individual projects (student-supplied) to culminate skills.

*HOME DEC TECHNIQUE [Ongoing]
This ongoing class will teach basic to intermediate skills to be used in home decorating projects. Students will learn methods for taking measurements, making/installing piping in seams, application of trim, pillow variations, pillow closures, proper curtain panel techniques, window treatment variations, bedding, slipcovers, and other necessary techniques. Sample materials provided.
*See supply list. Will complete individual projects (student-supplied) to culminate skills.

*Basic Sewing Machine Skills
The basic skills in this class are necessary to take any other class offered by Studio Julie Snow. Student will be familiar with threading and operating sewing machine, basic straight and zigzag stitches, stitch length and width, backstitch, basting, basic gathering, pivoting, basic seams.

*Hems
Students will learn how to professionally apply four different hem techniques: standard hem, rolled hem, double needle hem, invisible hem. Techniques will be applied to samples, and clothing. Students may bring an item to hem.

*Zipper Applications
Students will learn how to professionally apply zippers in clothing and/or home decorating items, using three different methods: centered application, lapped, invisible. Techniques will be applied to samples. Students may bring a project ready to apply a zipper.

*BIAS Applications
Part 1: Students will learn how to calculate for and make bias tape strips: single-fold, double-fold, piping.
Part 2: Students will learn binding, curves, corners (inside/outside), edge finishes, etc. Techniques will be applied to samples. Students may bring a project to apply a bias method.

*Buttons/ Buttonholes
Students will learn proper methods to sew on buttons by hand and by machine. How to cover your own buttons, how to calculate and construct machine buttonholes; demonstration of high-quality bound buttonholes.

*FABRICS!
Students will learn about all types of fabrics and their characteristics: weave, fiber content, care, common uses, recommendations for projects, etc. Students will work hands-on with fabrics and leave with a reference book of samples.

*Fitting & Alterations (Beg)
Students will learn beginning methods for measuring the body and altering patterns to make custom clothing. Also, some common basic alterations of ready-to-wear clothing - make it fit!

*Fitting & Alterations (Int)
Students will learn intermediate methods of altering clothing patterns for custom work, as well as more difficult alterations of ready-to-wear clothing – make them fit!

*Finishing Techniques (Intermediate/Advanced)
Determined by student’s needs, topics to be learned include: binding, facing, lining, stitch-in-ditch, understitching, turning tubes/straps, gathering, ruffles, trimming/grading, cuffs, etc.

*Prom/Wedding Alterations (Int/Advanced)
Determined by student’s needs, topics to be learned include: adding sleeves, bolero/ shrug jacket, taking in, letting out, taking up shoulders, resetting sleeves, redoing beadwork, lacework, raising necklines, etc.

*String Backpack (Beginner)

*Placemat Bag (Beginner)

*Patch Quilt (Beginner) Students will learn basics of patch-working, how to calculate and cut and sew pieces for a doll size blanket (20” x 25”), and how to back it.
*Supplies: (5) fabrics: 1/6 yd each; 2/3 yd for the back.

*Pillowcase (Beginner)
Students will learn how to cut out and sew together a standard size bed pillowcase, using straight stitches, edge finishes, topstitching.
*Supplies: 1 yd 45” wide fabric, thread.

*Reversible Apron (Beginner)
Students will learn how to cut out and sew together a reversible full-size apron. Techniques covered will be straight stitches, edge finishes, topstitching.
*Supplies: 1 yd each of two fabrics (45” wide), 2 yds matching ribbon, thread.

*Fleece: Scarf & Hat (Beginner)
Students will learn the easy fun of sewing with fleece by cutting out, sewing and completing a cute, warm and wearable scarf and hat set.
*Supplies: 1.5 yds fleece

*Basic Window Valance or Panel (Beg/ Int)
Students will learn basic measurement methods and construction of a basic rod pocket window valance or panel.
*Supplies: see Julie Snow to determine yardage for your window

*Decorative Pillow (Intermediate)
Students will learn to cut out and sew together a pillow slipcover, with cording insert trim, zipper closure.
*Supplies: 18” pillow form, ½ yard fabric, 2 ¼ yd cording to insert (with attached “lip”), 16”zipper, thread.

*Gathered Skirt: Plain or Single Ruffle or Multi-Tiered(Beg/ Int) Students will learn basic method of constructing any size gathered skirt. Techniques will cover fabric strips, gathering, and elastic waistband.
*Supplies: (Depending on skirt size): see Julie Snow for yardage, waistband elastic

*Memory Quilt (Intermediate)
Students will learn “nine-patch with borders” and learn methods to put together and complete memory quilt. This is designed for preserve the sweet memories of your favorite children’s outfits in a beautiful snuggly keepsake blanket. Also a great way to display all of your child’s team sports T-shirts, or the like.
*Supplies: outgrown clothing to cut up and “preserve”, batting, fabric for borders, fabric for backing (see Julie Snow to determine size of quilt, batting, and amount of border fabric).
